Roger is a traveling merchant with five beautiful daughters. Each time before a long trip, he ask each daughter if there was anything special they would like him to find for them on his travels. The four oldest daughters always asked for a new dress or a fancy new dress. The youngest daughter Ella was not like that. She would ask for the same thing every time. A blue rose, a flower so beautiful and pure it is known to represent eternal love.

While on a trip to the Far East, he came across a castle with a mystical garden. Locals had told him that the castle was abandoned centuries ago. So he went into the castle and worked his way into the garden. All the flowers were beautiful and glowed like they were touched by an angel. He looked among the flowers and found the blue rose Ella wanted. “This will make Ella very happy.” He slowly tries to remove the rose from the garden and ends up cutting the palm of his hand.

A figure appears behind him. “What are you doing in my castle? In my garden?” Roger turns around quickly and sees a monster. The monster grabs him and says, “I am the lord of this castle. You will answer my questions!” Roger looks at him shaking like a leaf in the wind. He says, “I am sorry! I was told this castle was abandoned centuries ago! I saw the garden and was hoping I would find a certain flower for my youngest daughter! I did not mean any harm!” The monster processes the information for a moment. “My servants and I remain here. Is your daughter beautiful?” Roger nods and says, “Ella is beautiful not just in body but of heart. She asked me for a blue rose. One simple thing and I wanted to grant her that.”

The monster tosses him to the ground and summons a demonic horse to his side. He says, “You have trespassed on my land. That gives me the right to lock you up.” Roger looks at him fearful for his daughters. He says, “The girls will not survive without me to provide for them…” The monster growls and says his eyes turning, “Then send one of your daughters in your place. Take my horse and it will take you home faster than any ship or cart. Once you have made your choice within five days, ride the horse back here. If you do not make a choice, I will hunt you and your family and imprison all of you.”

Roger scurries over to the horse and gets on. The horse lets out a large cry before running at full speed. He gets home in a matter of hours shaken and barely able to move. The five daughters race out to him and get him safely inside. He slowly tells them what happened and the choice that the monster gave him. “I will go in your place father.” Ella hugs her father as he falls to his knees. “The monster is cruel and dark. There is a reason the town where he lives calls him the beast. Please reconsider.”

She shakes her head and gathers up her things. “You need to take care of yourself, my caring father. I will stay with the beast until the price is paid. After all, I was the one who asked you for a blue rose if you could find one.” She gathers what is left of her things and her father takes her to the beast’s castle with the demonic horse. She slowly walks up the stairs with help of her father. A butler opens the door for her and motions her to come inside. She hugs her father good-bye and goes inside. The old butler closes the door behind her. He takes her cloak from her and suddenly candles start flickering on. She jumps and waits for the cruel prince to appear. (I want the prince to be cruel to her at first but as they start to fall for each other, he turns kind.)

It had been nearly 450 years since anyone had dared enter his home. He had been lenient on the trespasser trying to steal his blue roses, but he grinned at the idea of forcing the man to choose. His life and those of his children, for the sake of but one daughter. At first, he had wondered if the human would hold to his bargain and he rather looked forward to causing some chaos and panic in a land beyond his own. Gargoyles after all, were the most feared and reviled creatures to have ever walked the earth. As it happened, the human did hold true to his word as five days later, his demonic horse returned with the daughter.

Watching from a parapet across the foyer, he smiled darkly as the maiden was led into the house and his butler shut the door tightly behind. "Follow me." The disfigured butler said quietly as he hobbled towards the stairs leading down to the bowels of the castle. "You are to be housed in the servants' wing. When you have unpacked, you will be ordered upstairs to sit for the Master's appraisal."

Ella follows the butler to her quarters quietly. She was unsure what to think of this place. She felt bad for the butler. His body looks as though he has been through hell and back. Once they arrive to her quarters, she unpacks all her things neatly and quietly. She wondered what the Beast was like. Was he born a beast or was he somehow turned into a beast by his own heart? Once she is unpacked, she waits to see where she will be be led to next.

While Ella unpacked her belongings, the castle seemed to come to life. The walls whispered with curiosity and gossip and hidden eyes watched her every move. Because Ella was human, the ancient kitchen was fired into life to provide actual food and service for her stay. Whispers asked how long she would be staying, while others wanted to know where she had come from. And yet, with all the seeming life and movement in the castle, none of it was human. Ella had been the first human to enter the castle since the Master's punishment.

After some time, a figure entered the room. It looked like a giant bald chicken and it reeked of death and disease. "Come." It said to her as it backed up on outward turned feet. What could once have been a plume of brilliant blue feathers on its head bounced once or twice as it turned and began to lead Ella upstairs to the main dining hall. "My name is Chuck." It was male. "I run the kitchen and keep the servants in order. I would welcome you, but I doubt you have come here by choice." He said as they walked up the many stairs. "You're the first human to be here since the Master was changed. My staff and I will try to accommodate you as best we can. There are few rules here, but they are to be obeyed at all times without question." They reached the top of the stairs and he led her through the foyer. The dining room could be seen in the distance. "You never speak to the Master unless he speaks first. You must never venture through the castle on your own and under no circumstance, do you enter the west wing. Those are the Master's private rooms. There will be no contact with anyone from the town and you will not be permitted beyond the walls."

They entered the dining room and Chuck moved to a chair at the far end of the table. He pulled a chair out with one mangled feathered hand and offered her to sit. "The Master will be along shortly. Try not to anger him. Stand when he enters and sit when he sits. The food will be served when he arrives." He tried to offer some kind of smile with his beak, but it looked hideous at best....

Ella looks at the chicken like beast a moment before following him. "My name is Eleanor but I prefer to be called Ella. It is a pleasure to meet you." She was trying to be polite and cheerful. She waited until he explained the rules of the manner before speaking again. "I understand. I will do my best to behave appropriately here. I did choose to come here. I was the one who got father in trouble with your master. It is only fair that I get him out of trouble. I just my family will be okay in my absence." She was very sad that she would never see her family again. But she had to pay the consequences of her actions. She tucks some of her hair behind her ear. She sits down in the chair that Chuck pulled out. She smiled back at him somehow sensing he was trying to be kind.

Chuck blinked dumbly a few times as she explained what had happened. As far as he'd known, the girl's father had been stealing the Master's roses from the garden. He had no idea the man had done it for his daughter. "I see." He said quietly. She seemed such an innocent and kind person and he began to worry for her. The master's cruelty reached no bounds these days and he wondered how long the young beauty would last.

Once she was sat comfortably, he backed up towards the door and then stopped as he heard claws scrape and dig into stone work. Chuck straightened his jacket and stood up straight. He motioned for Ella to stand up straight also.

Kaimar had been looking forward to this meeting all day and despite his slaves begging him not to destroy her, he imagined doing just that with great delight. Checking that he looked his upmost frightening, he threw his slave away and stomped from his room and towards the stairs. Going down, he heard Chuck and the girl talking. So she had come here willingly, how very brave and sweet on her part. He would enjoy removing those emotions from her in the most painful and degrading way possible.

He crossed the foyer in but a few bounds and arrived at the dining hall doorway just in time to see Chuck motioning for the girl to stand up. With a ferocious roar, Kaimar swung his arm wide and it slammed into Chuck, sending the hedious chicken flying off somewhere in the room. The creature hit the wall with a loud thud and a yelp of fright and pain. Kaimar then levelled his gaze with Ella and he roared again as he stepped forward and dug his claws into the already beaten table......

Ella stood up as Chuck told her to and bowed her head in respect. When the gargoyle man hit Chuck, she felt bad for him. She looked at the gargoyle as he was now trying to intimidate her. It didn't work. She remained calm and waited for him to say or do something else. He was much like the men in her village. Her purple eyes stare into his calmly.

Kaimar glared at Ella across the table and lifted an eyebrow at the simple serenity by which she regarded him. This did nothing to quell his temper and with a deep growl, he dug his claws into the table and with a surge of power in his shoulders, he upturned it and sent it skittering across the large floor space. An instant later, he cross what distance was left and stood over her, towered over her.

"You will learn to fear me just as the rest of this miserable castle does!" He boomed over her head. "Chuck!"
The chicken was instantly on his out turned feet again and came quickly to his master. "Yes Sire?" He asked quietly.
"Dinner is cancelled!" Kaimar boomed, then glared down at Ella as his chest heaved with heavy breath. "She can eat when she learns!" He reached out then to grab the girl roughly and throw her at Chuck.....

Ella looks at the beast as he threw a tantrum because she was not afraid of him. She tensed up when he grabbed her threw her at Chuck. Not because of fear but because he had hurt her. Why did he want her to be afraid of him? He was the one wanted her here as his prisoner. Once they were away from the beast, she looks over Chuck seeing he was hurt. She rips a of her dress and uses the fabric to wrap his wound. "There. Don't want to upset your master more by getting blood on the floor."

She gets to her room and sits down on her bed. She felt lost and alone. There was nothing here. No life. Just damp cold darkness. Her sisters would not have lasted a day here. Too spoiled and self centered. Her father would have died in a few days or less because he got sick so easily. She on the other hand, could handle despair. She could hear whispering. "You know any of you could just ask me your questions. I will answer your questions about me as honestly as I can. But please ask your questions one at a time."

At first, Chuck was terrified that the girl had come flying at him. Kaimar's tempers had gone far beyond the odd tantrum at encroachers. It was clear when she hit the wall that she had been hurt, but she seemed only concerned with his injuries and that shocked the strange chicken. She tore a strip from her skirts to dress his wound and he carefully put his half feathered, half clawed hand over hers as gently as he could. "Thank you Miss." He said genuinely, "But there is little need. I will heal in a short while. I would be more concerned with your gentle self. I am so very sorry for the Master's temper." Deep down though, he was still grateful for the kindness she showed and when she left, he went back to the kitchen with something very close to a real smile.

Up in Ella's room, the whispers were rife long before she got there. All were curious and it didn't take long for her small kind act to reach them. Now they were even more curious. There hadn't been a soul in this place like her for centuries. Eventually, she arrived, but the whispers continued and it didn't take long for her to simply as them out loud. At first, they stopped, but after a short time, a small face began to appear in the wall. The face was that of a child no older than perhaps five or six. Then two more child-like faces appeared. These ones were older. As requested, they began asking their questions one at a time.

Where had she come from? Why did her father steal the Master's roses? How old was she? Why did she help the chicken? Why was she so kind to him? Was she there to help them? Was she there to save their Master?

There were many more questions the whispers wanted to ask, but these ones were the most important to them for the moment...

Ella looks at the children with a slight smile. She was a bit surprised to see children here. Chuck's words slowly went through her head. But she would leave that alone for now and answer the children's questions. "I come from the village far in the north from here called Sega. It is more of a desert village. Things are pretty hard there unless you're a merchant like my father." She takes a moment to catch her breath and her train of thought. "I am 19 years old. My father asked me and my sisters if there is anything that we wanted from anywhere that his trips would take him. My older sisters asked him to bring back dresses and jewels. I asked him if he could bring back a single blue rose if he could find one. He must of thought this place was abandoned and thought it was okay to pick a blue rose for me. But it wasn't. So now I am taking my father's punishment for him."

At their next set of questions she was a bit confused. "I was nice to Chuck because it was the right thing to do and it's always nice to help someone out when they're in trouble. I did not want him to get in trouble for bleeding on something. Especially when I was the one that has the master was mad at." Their last question made her think. Something was wrong with the master of this place? Other than his temper? Was he not really a gargoyle? If not, then he was under some sort of spell. "Could you explain what do you mean by save your master? What is wrong with him??"

The children began to chatter in the wall before one dared come out of it a little. Curly blonde hair and bright blue eyes stared nervously at her. "The blue roses are precious to the Master." The child said, It was a girl. "A long time ago, when Master was punished, all the roses in the gardens turned blue with magic. Any that are cut, hurts us here and there have been so many that have been taken over the years. The Master is very protective of them now and punishes anyone who would dare touch or damage them. They are all the Master has left." The child looked around cautiously before breaking her link with the wall.

The second the link between her and the drywall behind her parted, she began to lose the cherub like face she had. Her skin paled and began to crack like an old porcelain doll. She became bald with age and one of her eyes turned into darkness and then disappeared. "The witch that punished the Master told him that he would forever remain a gargoyle and such a frightful monster because of his cruelty. Many centuries ago now, I can't remember exactly, there was a vicious storm that was ravaging our once beautiful country. In that storm, an old woman came to the castle seeking refuge. The Master was the prince of these lands and such a handsome young man, but his heart was selfish and cruel. He laughed at the old woman and turned her away because she could not pay him to stay. All she had was a blue rose. She died in the storm, but his cruelty was seen by a witch. She saw his heart and the suffering he caused that lost old grandmother. She cast a spell on him and the castle and all of us. She turned him into the same ugliness that she saw in his heart. Until the day he learns love and respect, we all are cursed to live in shadows and deformity. Poor Charles, or Chuck as you know him, he's the only one that is willing to live with his condition to serve the Master. The rest of us, we stay hidden. He is frightening, young Miss, frightening and cruel. Some of us hold hope still that one can return us and this castle to its beauty and maybe it could be you."

A sudden noise in the hallway outside made the girl jump and she quickly ran for the wall. Once the link was made again, she looked like the angelic child she had once been and she quickly melted back into the shadows with the rest of her friends.....

Ella listened to the story and it sounded familiar in some way. She watched as the children disappeared before sitting on the bed. Her legs crossed. She says aloud to herself, “Over 500 years ago, an ancestor of mine cursed someone for being cruel to an elderly woman who died because of his spoiled heart. She is dead now but her strong magic is passed on down to me.” She twists her dress nervously. “If he is the person she cursed, then I am in big trouble.” She removes her dress revealing her badly bruised back. She wraps herself in a blanket. She slowly opens her door. “Chuck I need some assistance please if you are not busy.”

But it wasn't Chuck by Ella's door, it was Kaimar. He towered over the doorway with what could have been the most icy and cruel glare in his eyes that could ever have been imagined. He had been the noise that Ella and the children had heard and he'd heard plenty more than simple noise. Chuck was nowhere to be seen.

As she stood there wrapped in a blanket, Kaimar gripped both sides of the doorframe with his powerful claws. Such was his grip that they dug into the wood and stone beneath and he stooped down to be on a level gaze with his new guest. His thick tail curled and jumped at his rear with fury as it dawned on him just who this little beauty really was. "You were in trouble the second you chose to do your father's penance." He snapped, "Now, trouble is the last thing you need to worry about." His voice was surprisingly quiet, but the tone was unmistakable. One clawed hand released the door frame and reached for her throat.....

Ella looks at him unsure what to say. Even though he was going for her throat, she held no fear in her eyes. "Killing me won't help you. If anything it will just make you worse. I cannot reverse or take away the curse. You have to break it on your own. It's the rule of magic." She reaches out her hand and gently strokes his face. Her whole body was shaking in pain.

If she did not heal her body soon, she would not be able to move at all. She did feel bad for this person. This curse was designed to cause torment and isolation. Forcing the inflicted person to work on their social skills and learn to trust people to accept them as they are. This person has reverted back to the Beast personality of the creature he is now.

"And what makes you think I need or want your help?" Kaimar snapped as he batted her bruised hand away from his face. He showed nothing but contempt and hatred in his eyes for the girl in his grip, of which he tightened to cause just that bit more pain.

Part of him wanted to just kill her and be done with it, but another part of him wanted to play with her more, torment and torture her until she went mad with anguish like so many others in this hellish castle. He wanted to punish her, though he didn't care what crime he thought up to warrant it.

The walls began to plead with Kaimar to release Ella, but nothing dared reach out and touch him. Such acts carried a heavy and cruel punishment for them, but their voices could not be punished for it was simply air and one could not punish air for being air. They begged and begged until Kaimar began to feel them penetrate his thick scaly skin. He roared at Ella and threw her back again, hoping to inflict as much damage as possible without causing outright death. "Enjoy your first night, Ella." He said with an evil chortle. "I hear there be monsters in this castle at night." He turned and began to stalk away, laughing the whole time....

She watched as he walked away. She couldn't move anymore. Her body began to rapidly bruise and bleed. There was nothing she could do. She needed a bath. The water could help heal her wounds because of the magic that was in her blood. She fights to stand up but she couldn't move. She says speaking to the people inside the walls, "I need some assistance. Water heals me but I have to be able to get to some in order to do it. Is there any way you could possibly tell Chuck to help me?"

The moment they knew Kaimar had gone, every inch of the walls of Ella's room began to ripple and move. In the room adjacent, water began to rush through old pipes. Beneath Ella, the floor rippled and moved and eventually, hands began to appear everywhere. They held onto her tenderly and began to move her along the floor as carefully as they could towards the running water. Every soul in the castle now knew exactly who she was and why she was there and they wanted to help.

After some time, the hands delivered Ella, so to speak, to the connected bathroom and a large ceramic tub half turned and spilled some water on the floor. The hands left Ella then, they would not intrude on her privacy. To make things as easy as possible, the tub began to walk to her so she wouldn't have to. Towels dropped from the wall hooks and in the bedroom, drawers and small doors began to open and close and the swish of sheets as the bed was made up more comfortable for her to rest during the night......

Ella looks at the floor confused. "Thank you for your help all of you." She gets in the tub slowly after she arrives in the bathroom. Once the water covers her entire body, sounds of breaking bones can be heard. The water turns deep red as blood is filling the tub. Her hands grip the tub walls as the pain is extremely unbearable. She gets up out of the wall gasping for air. Her body now healed, she gets out weakly and hits the floor.

The walls and floor seemed to shudder at he sound of Ella's body healing and when she emerged again and fell to the floor weakened, the returning hands were quick to cover her up and carry her tenderly across the floor to her fresh bed. The water was drained away and the tub began to turn and shake to swill clean water and wash away the evidence.

Once on the bed, the hands emerged from the mattress and surrounding wood to tenderly dry her and cover her with the sheets and blankets. It seemed the castle wanted to make sure she was cared for. This young girl, this innocent soul was very important. She was the salvation everyone had waited so long for and the master's saviour whether he wanted it or not.

Ella lays in the bed and looks at the hands calmly. "I am sorry for all this. Healing magic comes with a price just like any other spell. My ancestor who cursed your master, she lost 60 years off her life as the price. I don't agree with what she did. No one deserves this curse." She curls into a ball as a tear goes down her face. "I don't deserve to be treated like this for her mistake. It's not like any of us deserved or wanted this." She cries softly and hides her face in a blanket.

The hands continued to tend her needs in the bed until they were sure she was dry and comfortable. One hand even conjured a brush and began to gently untangle her beautiful hair and brush it through over the pillow. As this was being done, the young girl that had appeared before emerged from the wall above Ella and reached out to touch her tenderly.

"The Master would have done this with or without knowing who you are, Miss Ella." She said sadly, "But you are right in that none of us deserved this, especially you." Her form rippled down the wall and onto the bed, keeping the connection she wouldn't change into the hideous doll again. She sat in the bed with Ella and curled up with her, staring into the blanket where she knew Ella's face was.

"I remember when I first came here. My dad was to be the King's valet and my mum was to run the kitchen. I was meant to be trained up in the kitchen to help Mum and eventually take over from her. Three of my four brothers were stable boys and my oldest brother Charles, he became a footman." She smiled to let the information sink in that she and Chuck were family. "For a while, everything was happy here. Charles was promoted to be Prince Kaimar's valet and my next brother, Daniel took Charles' old place. He was a bit of a brat sometimes and caused all manner of mischief for us lot downstairs, but he was a good person and he always cared about us." Her eyes began to turn sad then. "All that changed when the King and Queen were killed. The yearly storms came, you see and they took in some travelling gypsies that were struggling on the road. The King gave them shelter in the north wing near where we are now. But they weren't what the King thought they were and he and the Queen were murdered in their bed by one of them. Prince Kaimar was 17. After that, everything changed. He became suspicious of everything and hated travellers. He turned cold and distant. He came to his father's throne a cruel and hurtful man."

Ella uncovers her face and listens to the story calmly. She could sort of relate to his loss. “My mother was killed in front of me when I was seven. My father was away on business and one of the nobles desired my mother. He gave my mother gifts and did things for her trying to win her heart in my father’s absence. But she refused him. He got angry and violent. He struck my mother 50 times with a whip across her back and face. I healed her in front of the man with my magic. I was too young to know that normal people saw magic as a bad thing.” She moves her blue hair out of her face. “He dragged me into the middle of town square and tied me to a post before setting it ablaze. My mother ran to help me but the noble caught her and slit her throat laughing as he either way he won. No one could have my mother now that he stole her life.” She looks at her hands. “I got so angry, my magic took over. The flames turned into Hell hounds and pinned the noble to the ground ready to kill him upon my order. But…I couldn’t….I couldn’t be like him…”

She looks back at the girl. “Not everyone is out to hurt him or his subjects. I just wanted to pay my father’s debt. If I had the power to remove the curse, I would in a heartbeat. But I can’t. It can only be broken two ways: the one who casted it removes it or the inflicted does what is required to break it.”

The girl took up the brush from the vacant hand and began to brush through the soft mass of Ella's hair. "One way was removed from us 500 years ago." She said quietly, "So it is down to him." She stopped brushing, "And we all believe you are the key. You're the one that can change his heart, Ella. You're the one who can find the love and kindness in him that once was and we all hope that deep down, he knows that too."

Ella listened to what the girl was saying very closely. She says, "He won't even give me a chance to show him that I am a friend. How could I possibly be the key?" Her eyes grew heavy as she felt tired. It did not take much longer for her to fall asleep.

The next morning, she woke up feeling sore and not really wanting to move. However she had to move or she would not get her energy back. She get that slowly and changes into a dark blue dress. It was simple yet flattering to her natural form. She then brushes her long blue hair before braiding it. She wanted to keep out of her face yet still have her looking appropriate. She is then waited to see if she would be allowed out of her room today.
