She dreamed not of him leaving but of him coming back, her being with child and him being able to hold their children. She knew her brother would see through it, but she hoped that he would let her hold on to it till at least she was alone.

Hearing the water turned off she quickly whipped her face again hoping that he wouldn’t be able to tell that she had let a few tears fall. She closed her eyes waiting to see what he was going to do. He looked her over and smiled. "You look great. You will turn the heads of many a soldier when we get there. " he told her and pulled her into his arms. He kissed her deeply and then sighed as he opened the door to go downstairs.

"Come on you two." Mary called up as she spotted them. She looked up at her son. He looked so much like his father. She looked up at him with a mixture of pride, fear, and love. She was proud of him for what he had been able to do, feared he might not come home like his father, but loved him with all her heart.

Watching her husband get dressed, Dani felt that all too familiar pang in her heart. "Oh no young lady, you are going to have a proper breakfest. You sit down there and eat." Mary wagged a finger and pointed to a chair. She was not about to let her go all morning with out a proper meal to get her going. If she was anything like she had been with her husband, she would not have slept much either. They would have their jobs to keep them busy during the day but when things got quiet and lonely, they would be there for each other.

Alex finished his breakfest and then went up to his room to get his bag. He saw the recorder on the bed and chuckled as he shook his head. He listened a bit to what she had recorded and then recorded a message for her on it before putting it back on the bed. Then it was downstairs and off to the Post. Two hours later they were at the Battalion Rear Detachment headquarters. There were several soldiers there, replacements that were getting ready to go, those coming back for one reason or another. There were many a heads turned when they saw Dani. Alex just smiled and walked with her, an arm about her waist.

At the Admin Center for the Battalion he gave them a copy of their marriage licence and her social security number. He changed his Life Insurance to reflect Dani as his benificary. Then it was over to the Military Personnel Center to have the documents put into his Personnel Records and get her an ID card. More paperwork, more signing and more looks at him and Dani. He was considered a hero and more as was Dani. There was alot of handshakes and officers that wanted to welcome him. The morning rounded out with a trip over to the Staff Judge Advocate to do his will and a power of attorney for while he was gone.

The Battalion Commander's wife found them after being told they were on post. She hugged Dani and Mary and invited them both over for coffee when they had a chance. Then it was time for Mary and Dani to return home and for him to prepare for deployment. He held Dani a long time and kissed her deeply. "I love you." he said softly in her ear. "I'll be back." he then told her.

Eating was the furthest thing from her mind. She was feeling queasy from the nervousness. She swallowed and nodded she would have to force it down for Alex’s benefit she didn’t want him worrying about her when he was over there. Thanking Alex she smiled at him as he pulled her seat out. Stiffened slightly at Mary’s touch but knew what it was for, she didn’t want to think about leaning on anyone though, Mary would be worried about her son she wouldn’t dump on her. She had a sinking feeling that her brother would have her talking to someone though. Like Dr. Parks or something, she would go to satisfy him and for the reason that he would probably be passing on to Alex how she was doing but she would do so grudgely. She smiled at her family.

When Alex went upstairs Dani followed but only to the bathroom, she brushed her teeth and applied a little make up to hopefully cover up her dark circles from lack of sleep the last few days. She grabbed her purse and camera. She rode with Alex and his mom. Still putting on the brave face, she wouldn’t let Alex see how scared she was for him.

Once at the base she saw the looks and raised an eyebrow, she should have been offended or even flattered but instead she just winked at then and touched Alex’s arm. She held her head high, she knew either they were heading to a war zone, preparing to go in the future sometime or had just come back. Some may be single but she knew many were not. There was also a code so she would have no trouble from any of them. When at the Admin office with everything getting changed she was reminded that she needed her new name on her brothers as well. She did not think that stories of her helping the ones with the nightmares would have reached further then that room. Her work at the VA maybe but nothing else she did promise that she would be back at the VA on the following day, although she was given the option of having a few days off she declined she wanted to, no needed to keep busy.

All too soon it was time for her to say goodbye she held him tight and kissed him passionately. She smiled at him and stroked his face. She sighed and knew it was time to leave. She didn’t want to let go though and he would have to be the one that released the hug. She knew Mary still had to hug him goodbye. She would then return home with her and sleep, she had barely slept all night and was feeling it.

He didn't want to let her go but he had to. Once he did he hugged his mom, and then walked them back to the car. He had a feeling that both Dani and his mother was going to be crying pretty soon. He didn't want Dani holding it in like she had with her father. That was a bad thing. He would have to email the Doc at the VA center and have him keep an eye on her to make sure that she was not doing that again. It would give him more peace of mind knowing someone was keeping an eye on her emotional state. He knew his mother would try but he knew that Dani had a way of hiding it and perhaps would be able to fool his mother, but not a professional that knew what to look for.

Once he got both of them into the car, he stepped back up on to the sidewalk and Mary sighed and started the car up and pulled away. He waved at them untill they were out of sight and then turned and went into the Battalion Rear Detachment Barracks to prepare for redeployment. The Rear Detachment Commander came in and handed him his travel orders and bus ticket to the Air Port. He would be leaving in a few hours.

He checked his laptop and cell phone to make sure they were fully charged and then went to the bank to draw out a bit of money to take with him. He would not need much while he was there, but need some for certain comfort items that the Battalion's store would have for the soldiers, such as sodas, snacks and the like. They would also have a bank of sorts for the soldiers. He already had an allotment going to an account that he could draw money out of while he was over there.

The hours seemed to drag for him. He tried to sleep a bit but couldn't. Finally it was time to go and he took the bus to the Airport and went through customs and the like and finally boarded the plane that would be taking him and others over to Afganistan. it was going to be a very long flight with a refulling stop in europe. Again he tried to sleep and got some during the long flight. There was not much to do but sleep, talk with fellow soldiers and get into a game of cards.

Finally the plane touched down in Kabul's Air Port and as he got off the plane his Squad was waiting for him. "About time you got here. " the told him and handed him his equipment and M4 rifle. "We are on rotation for patrol about the city. Things have been pretty quiet lately which everyone is getting a bit anzy about. Everyone feels something is up and are a bit jumpy." Alex nodded. Would be like the Taliban to pull back some and try to lull the colalition forces into a false sence of security.

The next two months he kept himself busy and was out on foot and moble patrols to various places. There were the ocassional bombing, attack on check points and the like, but noting big. Word filtered down that the brass felt that the Taliban was planning something. In those two months, he kept sending Dani Emails on what he was doing, well what he could tell her. Here and there he called home and talked to her and his mother.

He kept her scarf in a shirt pocket, and pulled it out now and then to take in the scent. He also found the pictures on his laptop and chuckled every time that he looked at them., late at night when everyone else was bedded down. He mentioned them in one of his emails to her.

Feeling Alex let her go Dani bite her lip watched him hug his mother then walked with them back to the car. She sat in the back so she could twist and watch him slowly disappear. She then sat forward and let the tears fall. She was going to miss Alex; she felt her heart ache for him already. She knew that she would have to keep busy or she would really fall apart. She asked Mary to drop her off at the VA but she was refused as it was too late and Mary could tell that Dani did not sleep much the night before.

They drove through a local McDonalds just to get something in their stomach then she drove them home. Once she was out Mary hugged Dani and she smiled “Thanks Mary, I know this is hard on you too” They both walked into the house greeted by the animals. Skye knew something was wrong and that Alex was missing she whined and whimpered Dani scratched her ears. “210 days and he will be home” She found it a little funny that both her dog and cat seemed to adopt Alex so quickly, but figured they had seen the transformation that he had on her so they were grateful.

Feel exhausted both Mary and Dani turned in early. Dani climbed into their bed she breathed in his scent found her bed and held on to it. She found her tape recorder and rewound it so she could listen to his breathing. She closed her eyes and tried to think about what Alex would be doing. She finally gave up trying to sleep and turned on the TV and sat up.

There was a knock on her door she smiled knowing it was her brother. “Come on in Dustin” He appeared with a drink “Mary said this would help you sleep” Dani took it and smiled “Thank you” He looked at her and Dani shook her head “I will not be doing the same Dustin don’t worry” Dustin looked at his sister. The pillar of strength the one that had been through so much but even in her breakdown had been worried about him. Soon she would be taking that drive again back to the base to say goodbye to him.

Dani looked up at him. “Oh Dustin I was reminded before you ship out again we have to go to the base and get all your papers resigned in my married name” Dustin smiled went over and hugged her. “Alright Dani, for now get some sleep” She swallowed the last of the tea and snuggled into bed. Dustin turned the tv on low and closed the door almost all the way.

Skye and Comet stayed close by their master as Dani lulled to sleep partly by the recording of Alex’s breathing and partly by the tea fell asleep. Her dreams were full of Alex though. She was working at the VA and two uniformed officers appeared there to let her know that he had been killed. In her dreams she slipped back into her old ways and did not shed a tear, did everything that she had done when it was her dad, accepted the flag, done the funeral. Then at the funeral the same two officers appeared and informed her that her brother had been killed too.

She woke in the morning in a start. The same nightmare had played all night and she resolved not to take it again, nothing to help her sleep to keep her trapped in the night mares. She got up had a shower, got dressed, after her normal morning routine headed off to the VA.
Many were shocked to see her, most knew that she just wanted to keep busy, to keep her mind off of what was happening to Alex. She put in a long day but did everything she could to avoid going anywhere near Dr Parks office.

Weeks passed and she spent more and more time at the VA and at the base. She got together with other wives. Even the higher up wives had offered to take her out to coffee. She accepted gladly, anything to keep herself busy. She spent a fair amount of time with Mary too, she didn’t want her to be alone, what she wasn’t doing was spending much time sleeping.

Many of the women at the base loved Dani, she offered to babysit the kids, either to let them have time with their husbands if they were home on leave, or more often it was so the moms could have a time to themselves, She would do that then normally go to the VA. Or home for a bit to check on Dustin and her animals, of course Mary.

Dark circles were starting to appear on her face but Dani just kept covering them up with makeup. She sent a package to Alex twice a month and a letter every day, she always sprayed it with her scent. She always responded to the emails but wanted him to have something to hold on to as well.

Finding out others were not receiving anything she made sure to send them stuff too. She attended packing parties anything to keep busy.

She was feeling more tired but just chopped it up to her being overdoing it, but she couldn’t stop. The weeks slowly passed for her. With permission she had taken a few warriors and their family done to Clearwater Florida to see Winter the Dolphin. The trip had gone well when she got home she sent the pictures of her and the warriors with Dolphin to Alex she noted that he had been gone for about 2 months, meaning he had about 5 months left and Dustin had about 2 months before he would be gone. Dani was hard at work at the VA she had successfully, or so she thought, flown under Dr. Parks radar, she hadn’t been called in yet. She had already been at the VA for hours but there was one young Soldier that was being really stubborn, he was locked in his own private hell, wouldn’t talk to anyone and when anyone entered his room he was violent.

Dani had already worked around 20 hours if she counted the babysitting job that she pulled, just a afternoon thing so a mom could help surprise her young kids that daddy was home. She was then asked to stay for the surprise, she figured out it was to watch for signs of PTSD, she tried to explain that she wasn’t yet qualified but the wife begged her.

Entering the room she shooed the guards away. They would only go as far as the outside of the door if it remained open. The Soldier raised an eye brow at her bossiness. She smiled at him and sat down. “So tell me why don’t you want to see your family, yes you are missing an arm, but what about that 14 year old surfer, she got her arm bitten off by a shark and she is still surfing. Or even Winter the Dolphin she lost a tail and was able to learn to swim, your family just wants to see you” She patted the Soldier. “The best medicine is family” The Soldier looked at her talked with her for a few more hours and finally agreed, he apologized to the guards who responded with shocked looks as Dani simply smiled and walked out of the room. She stretched slightly and went in search of other things to do.

Still avoiding Dr Parks wing she found Dustin working out and started working out with him while she helped him. She had been up for more the 24 hours but had a bad feeling, Alex was hiding things, she knew he had too, but something was up and she knew it. She could feel it, even the reporters on the ground where he was kept mentioning that it felt like something was building.

Even though she had been back after rescuing her brother and had gotten married to Alex, he knew she had been through quite a bit. Especially watching on TV Alex’s heroic stand to give Dustin and the civilians a chance to get away, being in an attack on the Battalion compound, and then treating two wounded soldiers. It was hard enough on soldiers, trained to fight and endure such things, but she was a civilian and had never had to contend with such things.

He saw her working hard and putting in long hours to help fill in the time. He also found out that she was spending time at the base as well and not getting much sleep. He admired her determination not to let Alex’s deployment stop her from doing what she was good at, but her health was on his mind. He was a doctor and knew certain symptoms and things that told him her body was going through some changes.
When she left the soldier’s room he was just down the hall around a corner waiting on her. When she got there he stepped out in front of her his arms crossed over his chest. He gave her a stern look and said, “MRS. Morgan you will go home and get some sleep! That is an order.” He was very adamant about it. “I know you want to help as many as you can and do other things, like babysitting at the base, but your body can only take so much and I don’t think Alex wants to hear that you have had to be put into the hospital due to exhaustion, especially with you being in the condition you are in. I don’t think it is to healthy for the little one for you to be carring on like this.” A nurse came up with a clipboard with paper work on it and he took it signed some of them and then turned back to Dani. “I want you to come see me in the morning for some blood work. Now off with you to home and I do mean straight home and to bed.”

Dustin was getting himself ready to go. It had been two months and he was healed up. A bit sore here and there still but the Doctor had certified him ready to return to duty. He had gotten everything changed over to Dani's married name and he was ready to report in to the Battalion Rear Detachment. He would only have five months oer there now, which was not to bad. Then the Battalion would be back in the states at least a full year before it might be deployed again. But as talk was going around, they might not be going back to Afganistan. Troop withdrawal was suppose to be completed by 2014, so they might not be deployed again. It would be good for the troops. Home and not having to worry about being shipped off to a war zone again.

He knew that Dani was not going to like seeing him go as well. He could already see how she was tring not to worry or show that she was.

In Afganistan, the orders came down and the Platoon Leader gathered the platoon together. "We are going to releave third Platoon at Outpost Zebra. So gather up your gear and be ready to move out by 0600 hours."

Once released, Alex gathered his squad together and got them packing the vehicles that would take them out to the outpost, with everything they would need. He had gotten extra ammo, something he had a feeling that one day they might need. That was loaded along with MRE's, Water and their gear.

At 0600 hours they were ready with the rest of the platoon to move out. There were two additional passangers that the Platoon Leader had been told was authorized to go with them. The one Reporter and his camera man fthat had covered Alex's squads stand was now coming along to give the american people a look at his life after returning to duty. Alex looked at them shaking his head, "Interfer with my duties and I will personally shoot the both of you." he told them. They loaded up and headed out to the outpost. Alex sent a quick E-Mail to Dani and told her that he might not be in contact for a couple of weeks. He was not sure of how the signals were out there, if he would be able to send e-mails or not. Being a mountanous area they had to rely on relay towers to get radio messages.

Dani had been to worried about looking behind her for Dr Parks as she passed down his hallway that when he appeared in front of her she let out a startled “yep” kind of sound. She had planned on working out with Dustin, it would be her last chance as she was going to drive him to the base tomorrow to send him on his way as well. She took a step back but found some of her Soldiers all looking at her. “Yes you need sleep, you always boss us around it’s our turn” They looked at Dr. Parks “With the most respect intended Ma’am” Dani felt defeated she licked her lips. She nodded “Alright”

When his words registered she gasped and nearly fell over “I am not…I can not” She shook her head. “You are mistaken Dr. Parks I am not carrying anything” She took the forms just to please everyone there. Her brother appeared beside her. “Danielle?” Dani hung her head her brother only called her that when he was really concered or angry.

Dani looked up at him. “Dustin did you drive?”

“No Debbie drove me” Dr. Parks spoke up.

“I think its best if you drive Dani home as far as I can tell she has been up for nearly 40 hours. Shaking his head Dustin put his arm around her. “Come now or I will duct tape you to the bed” Gasping Dani looked up at him. She conceded though and after signing out and saying good bye went home.

She was met by a worried Mary, who drew her a lavender bath with lavender candles burning in the bathroom. The door was kept a little open in case she fell asleep. But in the bath she checked her Ipad and read the email. She cried a little, but sent him a loving email letting him know that all was good here, and that she had been working out and could now take him, just keeping in light. After the bath she climbed into bed and fell asleep.

In the morning she dressed. Had breakfast with her brother drove him to the Base first to get her blood work he wouldn’t hear it any other way Dani made her way to the clinic with Dustin at her heels. Getting blood work was never issue with her. Dustin was really excited, he had found out about the blood work and what it was for. As excited as he was to become an uncle she swore him to keep it quiet, she didn’t want Alex to get excited or worried, since even if she was she could lose it in the first three months. Once he swore he wouldn’t do or say anything she hugged him and said good bye, waving to the bus. Debbie had driven herself but then went to work. Dani headed to the VA, to start her shift. She couldn’t think about the results she would be going the next day for those results

His squad now numbered ten men, they had gotten replacements in. The older squad members had taken them under their wing and been showing them the ropes. Most were straight out of their Advanced Individual Training. Only a couple had been in the Army for more then a year. It made him feel like the old man of the squad. He had been back with the company and battalion only a couple months. They had been stationed in a realitively quiet and peaceful town. The locals were more friendly then in some other places.

The Platoon hit the road and they drove for several hours before they got to their destination. It was a few buildings made of wood and stone, with makeshift stone and sandbag walls between some of the buildings. A generator was dug into the hill and provided power to the buildings. On top of the low buildings were sandbaged areas that would provide cover for machinegun emplacements. In the middle of the outpost was a mortar pit with a couple of 81mm mortar tubes.

As they drove up the Fourth Platoon began grabbing their gear and heading out to the vehicles. They would take them back to Battalion and only left one HUMMVE there for running back and forth to Battalion HQ. Alex and his squad settled into one of the hardened buildings and then went to check out the place and where they would posted during their stay there. Alex checked the machine gun emplacement his squad would be manning, the ammo and condition of the sandbags. The Platoon Leader and Sergeant inspected the generator, and buildings and condition of the walls. Noted the positions of claymore mines about the perimeter on a map and the sectors of fire for the machineguns and positions along the walls.


Dustin sighed as the buss took off to the airport. He had good news but couldn't tell Alex about it, well not yet. In a short time he was in the air and on his way to Afganistan. Now Mary was estatic when she learned of the blood work and what it was for. Dr Parks had made sure that he called her and told her and told Mary also to keep an eye on Dani and make sure she was getting enough sleep. If she was indeed pregnant, she could not affort to be staying up late and doing everything she had been. Some yes, but not like she had.

Mary was already planning the baby shower and was going to be calling the Ladies on post when it was confirmed, to get things going.

Once Dani got to the VA it was clear to her that the Doctor had spread the word around though. She was shooed away from helping lift the wounded from beds to chairs and visa versa, instead was put on more of the leg and arm exercises, talking and only sponge baths. She was going stir crazy people were treating her as if she was made of glass and she hadn’t even heard the results back yet.

She knew that they were worried about her, her husband was deployed and now her brother had just left. She knew that everyone would be concerned about her but couldn’t they see that she needed to keep busy. After only 10 hours Doctor Parks arrived and told her to clock out. She pleaded with him, that Mary wasn’t home yet and she wasn’t ready to be alone she wouldn’t do anymore work just reading letters and books to some of the blinded men. Dr. Parks nodded slowly. “Fine a couple more hours but that is it” He knew that she would have no one at home when Mary wasn’t home so made a mental note to make some phone calls and find out when Military wives were meeting for her to go. He knew she wouldn’t like it, but he would just have to remind her that she had done the same thing to Alex, and he had improved.

Dani walked into a room of a young Marine only 18 who had lost his sight but was expected to get it back. She was reading through the Hunger games triliagy for him, why he wanted to hear a book about kids being forced to kill each other while their leaders watched was beyond her but it helped him relaxed and lulled him to sleep. After one hour the man had fallen asleep and Dani moved on, read some letters to more and helped them write back. Then Doctor Parks showed up again and Dani had no choice to return home.

Once home she was met by a excited Mary. Dani smiled and shook her head. “Its not even for sure yet” She looked her into the eyes “Please even if I am we cant tell Alex, he doesn’t need to be thinking about that”

She had dinner with her and then spent some time putting together packages one for Dustin and a small one for Alex cause she didn’t know if it would get to him since he would be at the outpost. She found it funny that both her cat and dog wouldn’t leave her side.

Eventually she went to bed and curled up with her Teddy bear sent a quick email off to both Alex and Dustin and fell asleep. She dreamt of children, but she was raising them alone, Alex never came back. She woke with a start again shaking her head. She licked her lips knowing that she needed to get to the clinic she had slept in till nearly 10 which wasn’t like her. She figured her Iron or Thyroid was out of whack again, this blood test would show everyone.

Mary was already gone but had left her a note telling her to make sure she ate. Having a bowl of cereal since she wasn’t feeling all that well she would have to tell the doctors that as well to make sure that she was sick since she was working with young kids and injured and sick veterans.

Making her way to the clinic, she showed her ID at the gate and was waved in. She made it to the clinic, it was full of mom with children and uniformed Soldiers, she signed in and then sat down. Making a note of the guards, the TV was playing CNN. She turned her head to see one guy he was pacing and looking a bit nervous but Dani couldn’t blame him it was a bit stuffy in this waiting room.

She took out her book and began reading it waiting for her name to be called.

Every thing looked in good order. Sentreys were posted and everyone else tried to get some sack time. It would be a couple weeks before they were releived by the First Platoon of Charlie Company. Patrols had been sent out and had seen nothing unusual. But late in the afternoon , all hell broke lose. First came the mortar fire from some where. Rounds came screaming in and the warning of "INCOMMING" was yelled and everyone scrambled to take cover as the ground erupted from the exploding shells. Then came the automatic rifle fire from several points. Chunks of the stone walls and buildings went flying as bullets hit and tore chunks out of them. Mortar rounds continued to come scraming in and took out the HUMMVE and generator.
On the roof top of one of the buildings one of the other squad leaders spotted the mortar position and called down the corrdinates and the two 81MM's came to life as the crews adjusted the tubes and began dropping rounds down them. The hills a mile away began to erupted as the shells hit sending clouds of dirt, dust and smoke up into the air and the shower of incoming mortar shells ceased. Alex and his squad manned their crew served machinegun and returned fire with it and their own rifles. From the vollume of fire coming in there had to be at least a couple hundred out there. "Morgan." came one of the platoon's men. "Lt and Platoon Sergeant have been hit bad. Radio is damaged. We can't call in for help."
Alex looked down at the man, "Get Staff Sergeant Riley. He needs to take command of the platoon."

The man shook his head, "He is not sure what to do. He just got promoted a few days ago. He asked for you to come see him."
Alex slid from his postion and dropped to the ground as bullets whistled by and hit the building he had been on. He ran from one point to another for cover as he made his way to Riely. He looked at the Staff Sergeant and could see the indecision in his eyes. "Morgan. You have more experience in combat then I do. The men know this and they look up to you. You need to take command of the platoon."

RPG rounds now began to slam into the walls. Three men were blown back wounded. "Shit." Alex growled out. He ran to the men and began dragging them to safety. Randy came running to help him as the RPG rounds seemed to be trying to concentrate on their machineguns. Alex could see the enemy moving ever closer. It looked like ants crawling out of an ant hill. "We can't hold this place." he told Randy. He looked up at the sky, and it was getting darker by the moment. "They will rush us when night falls completely. Spread the word, have the men fall back to the Eastern Wall. Doesn't look like there is any enemy in that direction. We will take only what we need. Weapons, ammo, medical supplies, water and the damaged radio. It might be repairable. Grab the wounded and we will leave under the cover of darkness, head east at first then north." he gave a pat on Randy;s shoulder as he began applying bandages to the wounded.

The reporter and his camera man were hunkered down in the mortar pit recording everything that was happening. He heard Randy tell the men to destroy the tubes and ammo for them, that Alex had taken command and issued orders to pull out. "The Platoon Leader and Sergeant are severly wounded and it looks as if at least three more soldiers have been wounded. SGT Alex Morgan the soldier that lead the stand in Bagdad not long ago, that saved the grandson of Iraq's Prime Minister, has now taken command of the Platoon." Bullets were hitting the dirt and sand bags by the mortar pit, making the reporter and his camera man duck.

As Randy moved off to do as he was told, Alex finished bandaging the wounds of the soldiers and a couple other soldiers of the platoon came and took them to the East Wall. Alex then went to each squad and told them to plant what Claymores they had about the compound on the way out and set trip wires. As it got darker he began sending the soldiers to the east wall by twos. When it was completely dark and it looked to be a moonless night, he had the rest move back. As he thought the insurgents began pounding the other walls with RPG's and mortar fire. With the sound of the explosions filling the air, the platoon slipped through the wall and into the darkness.

Then came the small arms fire. It was brutal, but there was no one there for the bullets to hit. As the platoon moved through a ravine to higher ground there came the sound of explosions from the claymore mines and the bright flashes. This blinded the attackers to some degree, giving them a bit more time to get some distance from the outpost.

The time came and went when the Platoon was suppose to radio in. The Battalion Radio Operator tried again and again to raise them but there was no answer. He informed the Battalion Commander and again tried to contact them. The next check in came and went and The Battalion Commander called the Company commander in and informed him. "Send a squad out there to check on them. I might be a faulty radio. But I want confirmation." The squad was sent and when they arrived, a couple hours after daylight, they found a lot of dead insurgents and the place tore up from all the mortar rounds and RPGs. But no dead american soldiers.

They made their report and the Company Commander was pacing the floor of the radio room. When he heard the news he slammed his fist on a table. "We'll find them." the Battalion Commander told him." A news crew was around and heard about the missing platoon and sent in their story which was plastered all over the news stations, especially when it was found out it was the platoon that Alex belonged to. That information was also put out.

On the TV in the VA, CNN news had picked up the story and put it out.

Dani went straight to work, not even bothering to check in with Dr. Parks, she had woken up to blood in her underwear, light more like spotting, but enough in her mind to convince her that she wasn’t pregnant, she had just over done it. Her emotional state could be chopped up to the fact that she just said good bye to her brother and two months ago her husband. Everything she was going through that Dr. Parks seemed to be convinced was pointing towards pregnancy she accredited to something else a little more believable exhaustion and her period. That’s all it was. She was already going to stay off the pill for when Alex came back they could start trying.

After a few hours of her normal thing, she knew that word had passed on to Doctor Parks, so she did the best to continue to avoid him, she didn’t want to hear the news of the blood work, either way she knew that he was going to try and send her home. Now except for her pets she was really going to be alone while Mary was at work.

As she was working she noticed that whatever room she went into the TV was off. She didn’t think anything about it until she walked into the main room and the TV couldn’t be turned off quick enough and she caught the newscast. A shot from Afghanistan, she began to shake her head seeing Alex’s name scroll by, He was missing. She gasped as the tears stung her eyes. She was immediately surrounded by arms of comfort. She took the arms then stiffened up. She saw the reporters and whipped her face to go to them.

When asked questions she simply responded “I love my husband” She shook her head at more questions and they were shooed out but they did not go far. Dani already had many Soldiers and family members that said that she would be protected and surrounded when she was ready to leave that they would surround her. She didn’t want to say anything else that would put Alex in trouble if whoever had him was watching; anything could be used against him. She wanted to tell the reporters, Alex, for him to remain strong, that she knew that nothing could break him but she couldn’t even bring herself to say his name not to the reporters at least.

Dani was about to turn her attention to the kids play room when suddenly a man stood up screaming “I am not fucking going there you can’t make me” Dani turned and like everyone was not really shocked until they noticed the gun. Dani tried to take a step towards him to calm him down when the man fired hitting her in the shoulder. She flipped over on her side cried out but then tried to stand. The pain was like nothing she ever felt but she knew that she had to get up and help this man. She looked down found that for whatever reason the wound wasn’t really bleeding that was a good thing. The bad thing, the camera men, although outside was trained on her she groaned slowly was able to stand. She turned to the TV. Now it was spilt screen Half showing the running story about Alex, the other have had her name, “Danielle Morgan, wife of missing Soldier shot at VA” She silently prayed that her brother would be sleeping and not be watching CNN.
The man fired his gun 4 more times hitting Soldiers that were trying to take him down.

“STOP” Dani screamed. She took another step holding her hands up to show she was no threat the man was shaking now. Dani spoke softly “Whats your name” The man looked at her “what?” Dani repeated the question. “I just shot you and you want to know my fucking name?” Dani nodded. “Pvt” He started Dani shook her head “No your name”

“Chad” Dani smiled

“Now Chad, how about letting me tend to these wounded here alright” Chad shook his head “NO” Dani looked up at him, “Do you really want Murder charges?” Chad shook his head. Dani called for a first aid kit and quickly went to work but it was quickly figured out that they needed more help than she was able to give. She looked at him again then at the young children staring wide eye many were crying as Chad paced with the gun between them shooting at random seeing him point the gun at a 8 year old girl she stood up quickly.

“Chad let them go, I will stay in their stay, but the children go, they don’t need to see this” Chad not liking how quickly she stood shot her again in the leg this time it grazed her leg and shot out the window behind her spraying glass everywhere.

The TV now read “Hostage situation getting worse, 6 gunshots now heard, unconfirmed reports that Danielle Morgan is trying to talk him down”

It took some time but eventually Dani was able to convince him to let the children and the wounded go. She anserwed the ringing phone.

“He is releasing the children and four wounded two are critical” Dani convinced Chad to let ambulance workers come in but as they were there he held a knife to her throat digging it in. That was all broadcasted out too. As scared as she was for Alex, she was grateful that he wouldn’t be seeing this, although that would be the most torture make him watch this newsfeed, seeing his wife with a bloodied shoulder and leg with a knife to her throat.

Finally when the children and many others were freed, in the commotion many other escaped at her orders. She knew that Doctor Parks was somewhere around here still but with the knife away she felt her throat it was bleeding a little but nothing too major.

The news feed was now reading “Mrs Morgan as convinced hostage taker to release children and wounded and support staff, many Soldiers remain reportedly to back up Mrs. Morgan” She shook head, the pain was getting worse, Chad wouldn’t let anyone near her to check her out.

The hostage situation had gone on for a few hours now but still CNN was reporting everything. Chad had threated to shoot Dani if he saw anyone coming towards the doors. Dani was teetering on passing out but Chad clocked her across the face with the gun “Don’t you pass out on me, they listen to you, your my only ticket out” Dani nodded. She looked to the men, she knew all of them could end this but she silently told them all not to with her eyes. Chad still had bullets left in the gun.

One hour later she had Chad almost calmed down when the phone rang again it startled him and he fired again this time hitting three more Soldiers. She calculated in her head 4 and 3 was 7 and 2 was 9 was there any others? She couldn’t remember so if she remembered a normal hand gun had 12 shots but she couldn’t be sure. She didn’t want to risk it, the phone calls had stopped and with simple dressing she was able to tend to the wounded with the gun pointed at her head. She could tell everyone was getting tired.

Suddenly her attention was drawn to the family room the door was opening and there stood a young girl three years old clearly just woken up from a nap, Chad pointed the gun at her Dani hearing a Soldier behind her whisper. “That’s Anna, shes my daughter, she is deaf”

Chad was too busy screaming to hear. Dani quickly signed “Its okay don’t worry but stay there” She could tell that Chad was getting more and more agitated that Anna wasn’t anserwing him. “Chad she is deaf she cant hear you”

Chad cocked the gun “Well she will hear this” Dani knew this girl was going to get shot so she quickly turned around earning herself a large 9 inch cut to her forarm but she wrestled the gun away, this was all was being shown on the tv. Dani got the gun pointed away from Anna just as it went off right in the middle of Chad’s forehead. Dani screamed and fell to her knees the people outside seeing all of this rushed in Dani was screaming and crying, she was now bleeding from her shoulder and arm and her face was swollen from where he had struck her with the gun.

She felt arms around her and then everything went black as she finally gave into her wounds.

Patrols were sent out trying to locate the platoon, but not knowing which direction they went made it a bit hard. The country was mountainous and there were many places they could be that were hidden from sight as well as satilites. The battalion commander and company commander looked over a large map. "If they are trying to evade and keep out of sight of the enemy, they will be out of sight of our people as well." the battalion commander said.

Alex moved the platoon along, keeping to cover as much as possible. They had headed east and then north, to try and put the insurgets off thier trail. "Sarge." one of the soldiers taking care of the wounded. "If we don't get the LT and Sarge back soon....." he shook his head a worried look on his face.

Alex took a deep breath and clenched his jaw down tight. "Not on my watch!" he told the soldier. He was not going to let them or the others die. Both had wives and kids and he was not going to let them become fatherless. He looked at his map and got his bearings. "We have to travel this way. There is a communications tower here. He pointed to a spot on the map. "Might even have something we can rig up to get the radio working and call in for retrival." But on foot it was two days away.

Back at the VA, Dr Parks appeared and began treating Dani's wounds. The sounds of sirans of ambulences and police could be heard. Soon enough there were para medics, cops, and of course the reporters everywhere. Those wounded were stabalized and rushed to the local hospital. Police pushed the reporters back and anyone trying to get in and see what was happening. Dr Parks got into the ambulance with Dani and rode to the hospital with her. He looked down at her, as she lay on the gurnney and the para medics hovered near by making sure her vitals were good.

He said nothing, knowing that her mind was in turmoil. He held her hand and just sat there. When the Ambulance got to the Hospital, Mary and Debbie was there waiting for Dani and Dr. Parks, but Dani was rushed into surgey to remove any bullets, and also to stitch her up.

On the plane there was the capability to tap into the local TV and radio Stations that they crossed over. The airwaves were full of the news and Dustin watched it on the screen infront of the plane. He was trapped on the plane. He could not be there with Dani nor could he be on the ground trying to find Alex. He felt so helpless and fustrated.

Laying there Dani was barely aware of anything. She could hear the sirens, felt herself being lifted. The pain was incredible now, the adrenaline leaving her body she now felt everything. As she was being lifted into the ambulance she felt a hand. She couldn’t squeeze it though. The paramedics covered her in a blanket “She is in shock still” The paramedic raided to the hospital.

In the hospital she was able to open her eyes she saw Mary and Debbie mouthed “Please don’t tell them” then was wheeled past them. She was fighting to stay awake she looked at Dr. Parks. “Anne?” she whispered hoarsely, talking really hurt. Dr. Parks patted her arm and smiled “She is fine” Dani nodded. “Arrest me?” She asked trying to ask if she was going to get arrested for murdering Chad.

She was wheeled away from him before she could get her answer. She began to cry. Her hair was stroked as she was put under. After hours of surgery and 150 stitches to her arm, gauze on her leg and neck her left eye needed four stitches from being struck her left side of her face was swollen, she looked a lot worse than she was.

Finally she was wheeled into a private room. The doctor looked at Mary. “Mrs. Morgan here is a fighter, many people would have passed out from the single bullet, but she continued going for hours. She lost a lot of blood, that is why she is hocked up to some, she is in a medical induced coma, I don’t want her to have to deal with the pain” He rubbed the back of his neck. “I do not know if she knows but she is pregnant, about 8-10 weeks along, still early enough to terminate, if you think she would want the baby, she is going to have to take it easy on the pain meds, it might be best to keep her under for 2 weeks at least.”

He then left, Dr. Parks entered. “Mary, I am so sorry” He had tears in her eyes, “She is a hero, she saved many lives, even little Ann, a deaf girl who somehow was missed when they cleared out the children room” He stepped closer offering coffee to both Debbie and Mary. “I know you don’t want to leave her, but if there is anything at home with Alex’s smell, it might help her” He had a small fetal monitor “Borrowed this, I know Dani would want to keep the baby, also that she would of found out first but too late for that” He put it down on the bed.

He would leave it up to them. He was just trying to help. “When she wakes up you can tell her there will be no charges” He looked at her. “She might have thought that she would be convicted of murder”

Debbie gasped and Dr Parks shook his head. “She saved a young child, as far as she is concerned he shot himself, I think that might be best for her, of course the media is already running it, but for now let’s just protect her” He rubbed the back of her neck and looked down at her. “When the swelling goes down and she is doing better there are a lot of men and one special little girl that wants to see her”

Dani was already trying to fight the medicine that was keeping her under. Her face was twisted in pain and her heart rate was going a bit radical. She wanted her Alex, he made everything better. Nurses came rushing in and tried to give her more meds to keep her out.

((Okay not the best hope its still good...I talked to a medical friend to get some of this...you can decide if they listen and how many hearbeats they hear or if in the attack she lost them))

Mary and Debbie stayed at Dani's side in her room. They had talked to Dr. Parks for a little bit and was thankful for the coffee he had brought. The nurses began bringing in flowers and small little gifts form the people of the city. There was an outpouring of sympathy and concern for Dani. It was quite well known what kind of work she did and how well she did it. She was admired by many. Quite the opposite of what it had been only a short time ago.

Both Dani and Alex ment a great deal to the citizens of the city. They had made such an impact on it. A shining example of what people could do and be if they set their minds to it. So it was not to long before the room was filled with flowers and gifts and more had to be stored out in the waiting room area. Mary took all the cards and read every note. Tears ran down her cheeks as she smiled and looked over at Dani. She wrote down everyones name and would be sending out thank yous to everyone.

Mary eyed the fetus monitor and could not help but want to take a look. She smiled as she looked at it and saw that there were two distinct heart beats. "Twins." she whispered to Debbie. "Going to have to get more for the nursery."

Debbie left for a bit and returned with the huge teddybear from Dani and Alex's bedroom and she sat it on the bed next to Dani. Mary had seen Dani in her bed, her arms wrapped around the bear many a times when she had checked on her. She knew what it ment and could smell the Alex's calon on it. Mary could see that it seemed Dani was fighting the drugs that kept her under. It might be recommended that she be kept under but that was something Mary knew Dani would not want. She talked to the doctor in charge to bring her out of it. Finally he agreed to do it and placed her under some pain medication. One that would not be harmful to the twins, but would help her cope with the pain that she surely was going to be experincing.

She also kept the TV on, and one could see the worry on her face and in her eyes as the news media continued to report on the missing platoon.

In Afganistan, Alex and his platoon continued to stay ahead of the insurgents and make their way towards the communications tower. On the morning of the second day they found a destroyed HUMVEE. The radio was non operational, but it had the part that they needed to repair the radio. But they still were at a point where the mou8ntains would play havoic on transmissions. Their best bet would be to make it to the Tower and be able to use its ssatilite link to get their message out.

They arrived at noon and the radioman got busy hooking everything up.. The Tower was on a hill top, in the middle of what had once been a village, but now lay in ruins. Alex began deploying the men to various defencive spots and he himself went to the highest point of the village, a ruined tower. He sweped the landscape with his binoculars and spotted the insurgents on their way towards them. "Damn." he muttered and then came down to the radio.

He looked up the call signs and frequencies for the day and password. Then he took the mic and keyed it. Tango 1, this is Zulu 2, do you copy?"

Back at Battalion Headquarters the radio operator's eyes grew big as he heard the call signs and voice. "Colornel!" he yelled out, "Its them!" Immediately the entire room fell silient, as the Battalion Commander croseed the room to the radio. "Zulu2 this is Tango 1, report." he said as calmly as he could.

"Tango 1, request immediate medivac and extraction. Zulu1 and 2 actual severly wounded. Have three more wounded. Insurgents closing in on our position, numbering from 200 to 300. Coordinates.........." he looked at his map and read off the coordinates of their location."

"Roger Zulu 2." a map was placed on the table before the battalion commander and the location circled. "Hold tight," he shook his head. "Will take at least one hour for transport to arrive. "

He turned to look at the Company Commander and saw him running for the door. He gave a slight smile knowing that the Captain was already anticipating his orders. Once out side the Captain yelled out, "Saddle up people. We move out in 01 mikes. The company already geared up and ready, as they had been for the last few days headed for the Blackhawks waiting. The captain handed the pilot of the Blackhawk he was flying in a map with the coordinates.

Three gun ships and several blackhawks lifted off and began their journey to Alex and the platoon's position.

Back in the Battalion Command Post the Battalion commander was on the phone to the Division Commander. "I need eyes on that position sir. I need to know what is happening."

"There is a Predator in the area. Will have it retasked." came the Generals voice on the other end.

Mean while at the new position, the reporter and his camera man was also hooking into the communications tower. Soon he was standing infront of the camera, mike in hand. "This is Robert Jones of CNN reporting to you live from Afganistan. Three days ago my camera man, myself and a platoon of american soldiers arrived at an outpost........." he went on narating as he also sent the taped feed of that battle to the CNN station in Kabul who inturned sent it out to every news media. He went through the battle and told how Alex had taken command of the platoon after the platoon leader and sergeant had been severly wounded. Their escape and travels for the next two days and what was about to occur.

"It is quite evident that between two and tree hundred insurgents are moving in on our position as I speak. Help has been called for, but it is not known if they will arrive in time or not." he had the camera man pan the area showing the platoon preparing for the assault that was to come.

On the TV in Dani's room and all over the country, news crews were putting out, "This Just in from Afganistan. The missing Platoon with Sergeant Alex Morgan has been located. Reporter Robert Jones, live, from Afganistan, with the Missing Platoon."

Laying in the bed Dani was in like a dream like state. In her mind was her life going by at high speed. Her young life with her father, her father deploying, her mother leaving, her father dying, her life of that dodging teachers and Military personal, finding Alex, her life with him, being in Iraq having the injured land on her, coming home, the wedding, the honey moon, both Alex and Dustin leaving her, ending with and the hostage situation, little Ann having the gun pointed at her, she could see herself wrestling with the gun then the gun going off in the middle of Chad’s forehead.

Even in her induced Coma she was clearly saddened and worried. Once the teddy bear was placed with her and she smelt Alex’s scent and could feel the teddy bear everything calmed down, her heart rate she still fought though. When the doctor finally agreed to take her off the meds her eyes fluttered open.

She tried to talk but the meds made it too hard, her eyes were coated in a sticky goo so she couldn’t open them she signed. “Mary?” She arched in pain but then relaxed as something was injected into her. She still couldn’t open her eyes but she was able to horsely whisper. “How….ever…one?” She tried to lick her lips but couldn’t. She twisted side to side and reached out with her uninjured arm and touched the teddy bear. “Alex?” She asked as tears rolled down her cheek. She was clearly worried about him.

Debbie took a warm cloth and wiped her eyes clear of the tape that had held them close for the surgery. She then rinsed the cloth and wiped it again. Dani slowly opened her eyes blinking at the bright lights. Debbie dimed the light above her bed then placed an ice chip in her mouth. Finally after three more Dani felt her throat moisten enough to talk.

But her attention was brought to the tv “No, not again” She looked at Mary and Debbie “He don’t know does he?” She looked at her scar and winced. “Is little Ann okay?” She then brought hand to her mouth. “Oh god, am I going to be arrested for murder?”
She cried. “I didn’t mean to kill him, I just didn’t want him to shoot Ann” She looked around “Are they going to arrest me?” She took another ice chip and thanked Debbie. Then waited for all the answers she then eyed the monitor. “What is that?” She asked with a raised eyebrow then felt her face. “Is my face swollen” She shook her head. “Stupid CNN was filming it, I hope Dustin and Alex haven’t heard”

She then took the teddy bear and licked her lips watching the tv. “How long have I been out?”
