Magnus watched as Alec took a candy cane, his own dangling out of his mouth as he sucked on the end. He raised a thin eyebrow as his Shadowhunter broke the candy, which was a bit odd, but he didn't say anything. Everybody had a different method to eating them, and he figured watching Alec eat his would prove to be interesting. Maybe he should have waited until they were at home, but it was too late now.

It was hard to keep the handle of the candy cane in his mouth without it sticking into the side of his cheek, or cutting his gums, or even slipping down his throat. He tried breaking it as soon as he could to avoid most of these problems. He liked being done with the handle first, then he could focus on turning the rest of the candy cane into a sword. That point, unfortunately, tended to stick into his tongue, or his gums again. It also usually broke when he was trying to make it sharper.

Magnus guessed what Alec was going to do with his candy cane, which was rather amusing, but he did nothing but smirk slightly, using two long fingers to spin his own candy cane in his mouth, sucking on it lightly, allowing it to dissolve at it's own pace. He didn't like to rush things or bite it, liking to savour the flavour. It had become rather quiet in the room now, most of them focusing on desserts, or exchanging short sentences. It was an odd setting, compared to what he was used to. Loud, unruly people were his normal crowd.

Catching on to what her children were doing, Maryse sighed and told them not to do it. Alec, who had been in the process of making it sharp, bit the tip off so she couldn't get mad about it. He'd make another as he sucked on the end anyway/Isabelle bit hers off, but left a stub of it so it was easier to make another point. Max, trying to learn from them but fearing his mother, started on a new end of the candy stick. Robert, side glancing to his wife, promptly broke off the tip that he had been going for.

Magnus looked up when Maryse chastised her children, hearing the snap as Alec broke the tip of his candy cane off easily. The funny part was hearing echoing snaps as the rest of them followed suit, followed by Robert. He snickered slightly, pulling his candy cane out of his mouth and observing the rounded end he had created, already pretty far through the candy. "Amazing how desert makes a family nearly silent" he commented, sticking the candy back in his mouth and proceeding to suck on it.

"Yeah, for cereal," Isabelle replied, snapping hers in two and sticking them under her top lip. "Looky, Max," she said with a struggle to form the words correctly. "Walrus." He looked at her and followed her example, then getting a scolding from Maryse not to play with food. Alec had tried it the first time she had showed him. It hurt his gums to press those up against his teeth and try to talk. Plus, he had almost choked on them, which Isabelle had claimed was nearly impossible. Apparently not for him.

Magnus raised an eyebrow at the walrus tusks, wondering how long it had been since he himself had done that. It couldn't have been that long ago. He took his own candy cane by the handle after Max got scolded and held it to his forehead, the end sticking up diagonally. "Unicorn" he said, tossing his head once like a horse, sending his hair to the side. It often got in his way when it wasn't spiked up properly.

Isabelle, spotting a challenge anywhere from Magnus, took two more candy canes out of the bowl, broke off the handles so at least there was a good portion to hold them. She may as well have just not broken them. She held them on top of her head. "Alien," she declared, the curled handles being the antennae on the alien. "Mine is cooler." Max looked to the both of them, trying to guess which one was cooler. His sister's was more original. Anyone could take the rod of the candy cane and put it to their forehead.

Magnus raised an eyebrow as Isabelle reached for more, and he had a feeling that this was going to turn into a rather interesting contest. "Indeed it is" he agreed, putting his candy cane down and grabbing two, hooking the handles around the front of his ears so that the ends pointed back, and diagonally upwards, and he held them there. "Elf. Mine's more Christmasey" he declared, moving his hands, keeping the candy canes on his ears with magic.

"You are cheating, good sir," Isabelle said, using one of the candy canes as a 'walking stick.' She put on a false British accent, overly formal, annoyingly so. She was pretty sure most Brits didn't talk like this, but just for the sake of annoyingness, she used it. "I do say, magic is cheating. " The other candy cane was used as a pair of the spectacles that old ladies wore to see things closer in theaters.

Magnus raised an eyebrow, shaking his head to contradict her. "Magic was only to hold them there, because I'm lazy. It's not cheating" he laughed slightly at the fake accent. He grabbed two more, and stuck one in the back of his hair, which stayed thanks to the bit of hair spray he had used, taking the ones off his ears and hooking two handles together, grabbing the joined parts so that the whole thing had a bit of a curve to it, using the last one as a makeshift arrow, pulling it back. "Gimme a cookie or the little one gets it" he threatened, pointing the 'arrow' at Max.

Max laughed at the candy cane bow and arrow set, something like his brother used. Max reached over for a cookie. He liked this person already. He was colorful, cheerful, and creative. "Here's a cookie if you aim it at someone else," he bribed, learning how to bribe from his sister when she wanted to get something out of someone else.

"Max, where did you learn how to bribe?" Alec asked, not recalling if Jace or Isabelle had taught him. Jace did a lot of bribing to get whatever he wanted out of them, Isabelle only bribed Jace or their parents.

Magnus pretended to think for a moment at the proposition, before nodding. "Deal" he grinned, dropping the arrow to grab the cookie, putting it on the table in front of him and picking up the arrow again, aiming at Isabelle this time. He looked up at Alec's question, glancing to Max and back to his fiance. "Every kid should know how to bribe" he decided, knowing most parents would hate that, which was probably the point. Every child needed to know how to get their way at least sometimes.

"Um, I didn't even know what bribing was until Jace got yelled at for trying to talk me into getting in trouble for him," Alec said, even though everyone would figure he was the kid who would be slow on the mainstream terms and such. "What would a kid really do with bribing though? Homework help?" That was all he cold see Max using bribing tricks for, telling someone he'd get them something if they'd do his homework for him. Kids didn't ask for much, he guessed.

Magnus wasn't all too shocked by that, simply laughing at his fiance and shaking his head slowly. "Yes, and that's the difference between you and most other people" he pointed out. He put the candy canes down and pulled the one out of his hair, putting them down on the table and picking up the cookie that Max had given him. "Bribes for sweets, homework help, secrecy" he shrugged, "Blackmail's always fun though" he grinned, finishing the cookie off in a few bites.

"I don't think Max knows any blackmail material," Alec blinked. "Do you?" Max just gave him a shrug. He didn't know what was worth using as blackmail. No one had really done anything to deserve it, and there wasn't much he wanted right now that was out of his reach. "Blackmailing people is bad, Max," Alec told his younger brother, not wanting him to grow up too much like Jace, since that had been his idol. "People can always get you back too, you gotta watch it when you make people mad." Payback was bitter sweet on either side.

Magnus wasn't sure Max knew exactly what would be blackmail-worthy anyways. Most kids didn't. He had had an eight year old try to blackmail him a long time ago, but had simply laughed and told the child not to try to beat him at his own game. He opened his mouth to object to what Alec was saying, but figured that would be a bad influence, so he cleared his throat slightly. "Yes, blackmail is very bad. Don't do it" he nodded wisely, eyes closed for a moment. He wasn't worried about people trying to get back at him with blackmail, since people knew what he was like.

"Pumpkin pie, guys?" Maryse asked, interrupting before Max got any ideas in his head from the older children and Magnus. Her eldest son was talking Max out of it like a good brother role model, the daughter not being a role model. She wasn't too sure about the warlock though, he sounded like it was no big deal and even had reasoning into it, and then sounded like he might care. She got up for the whip cream in the fridge, hopefully untouched by Robert. If not, she had a spare hidden in the back. He usually didn't find the extras she bought. The first one in the open was half empty, she shot her husband a look. She brought it over to the table and shook it up.

Alec couldn't help but think of Magnus' fond enjoyment with whip cream, and how sweet and cold it was. He didn't risk a side glance to check if Magnus was thinking the same thing.

Magnus glanced up when Maryse intervened, distracting them all with the idea of more desert. He stretched slightly, leaning back in his chair, lounging as best he could on the small surface. He eyed the whipped cream can for a moment, feeling the smirk spread across his face. He wondered briefly what Alec was thinking as he sent him a sly smirk, deciding he was going to get some later that night. As well as some chocolate sauce to go with it. This night was sounding better anf better, Maryse of all people unintentionally giving him ideas.

Isabelle coughed into her fist as she caught yet another pretty obvious-of-intentions Magnus look. She had an idea of what Magnus might be doing tonight, what did Alec think right now then? He had to be smart enough to figure out what might be going through Magnus' mind. Did he like whip cream the way way too? Isabelle liked dipping into the can like her father, her mother didn't need to know that she'd actually been the one to take half the can of whip cream.

Magnus shot a grin at Isabelle, knowing the cough meant she understood what he was thinking loud and clear. He winked, knowing there was now one person who knew his plans for the evening, and he still wasn't too sure if Alec knew. As long as Maryse didn't catch his smirks, he was fine. But he was in a great mood now, looking forward to tonight, so he wasn't sure the smirks could be hidden very well. He eyed the pumpkin pie for a moment, smiling slightly. He loved pie, but hadn't had any in a while.

"Help yourself," she said, placing the pie slicer in the middle of the pie, drawing a neat line to start off someone dividing the pie. Isabelle was technically allowed to cut it because they'd all be right here watching to make sure she didn't slip anything into it.

Alec liked pumpkin pie as much as the next person most of the time, but it was only good once in a while. He enjoyed it with family and all, sure, but pie was something that he didn't want to jump at every chance he got. Maybe every other chance.

Magnus was still for a moment before grabbing one of the small plates on the table, reaching for the pie slicer and getting himself a piece of the pumpkin pie, reaching for the whipped cream next. He kept in mind that he was a guest, and it would be rude to drain the can, so he used a moderate amount, reminding himself that there would be more later. He finished grabbing the pie and sat back again, grabbing a fork and starting on the newest stage of his dessert, candy canes still lying on the table in front of him.

The Lightwoods handed Luke a slice, while Jocelyn politely declined the pie, then the Lightwood children took turns grabbing a slice. Robert dished his wife a slice and himself a slice. He waited until everyone was done with the whip cream before using the last of it. Maryse just rolled her eyes at him, prepared to get the other can if anyone wanted more. She announced that for the table just so they understood they could have more whip cream if they wanted it.

Magnus looked around as people took their pie, and then it was announced that there was more whipped cream. He was tempted to ask for more, but he resisted, even if his was almost gone from his stupid habit of eating it off of the pie by itself. He couldn't help himself though, his sweet tooth acting of its own accord. He finished his pie and vanished his plate, leaning back. "I think I've gained fifty pounds" he sighed, putting a hand on his flat stomach.
